Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1902 one cent coin

Question
I was given a 1902 one cent penny in change one day.  I noticed it right off because it doesn't look anything like any penny I had ever seen before.  How do I find out if it is worth anything and if it is how do I "sell" it?

Answer
Gail,

In average condition (full rims on both sides, all basic outlines still visible, no damage and not cleaned), it's worth about a dollar.

If you can read all the letters in LIBERTY on the indian's headband, it will be worth $2.00 or more.

If the LIBERTY is really strong, reply with a picture and I'll see if I can appraise it for you.

If you do a search on eBay in the completed auctions, you can see what a similar coin has sold for recently.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
