Question
Dear sir, Would you give me an estimate of a 1972 Proof Set minted by The Franklin Mint for Bahama Island currency?  Thank you very much.

Answer
Hi Richard,
The 9-coins proof set for 1972 contains roughly 2.5 ounces of silver coins, and that is where most of the value comes from. The single proof coins that are not silver typically sell for just a couple of dollars each. The most recent catalog value for a complete set is listed at $30, which was before silver values came up significantly. The practical market value for this set today is in the $50 to $60 range. Please note that if you wish to sell the set on eBay, it is advised to put a start price of $50. When starting the auction low, these sometimes under-sell in the $30-$40. You would have no problem getting between $50 and $60 for it.
If by chance you have the rare 4-coin Gold proof set for 1972, that one is worth $2,000+.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
