Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Canadian Pennies

Question
QUESTION: Hello,
I am the same person who sent the "Two Foreign Coins" email. I forgot to tell you how i acquired the two coins. They were in a lot of eleven that i bought for around three dollars. The group consisted of the two coins, two V nickels, a Canadian nickel, and some Filipino coinage. I guess that was a good buy!
I have one more question. I have found two different types of Canadian pennies in pocket change and was just wondering if they had any value.
The first is from 1972 and has little lust left but almost no wear. I thought it could have some value because it it s a little old, it has a younger picture of the queen, and they have changed the composition since then.
The second is from 1987 and has some lust left, but also a few scratches and marks. I thought it could have some value because it is  the 12-sided version and it has a younger effigy of her majesty.
Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Andrew,
Unfortunately the post 1936 small Canadian cents do not have value in circulated grades. there are a few rare varieties, but not for either of the two dates you have. They are basically worth face value at present.
Thanks again! =)

QUESTION: Sorry to bother again, but I have one more question. Is their any Canadian coinage that has been demonitized or cannot be used anymore?

Answer
Hey Andrew,
Yes, all George VI and earlier coins except the 1937 and later small cents and nickels have been either demonetized or withdrawn from circulation for their silver value. The older coins can certainly still be used in local situations. In fact, some "mom-and-pop" shops still take payment in the form of old silver coins, they simply value them by weight and the price of silver instead of face value.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
