Question
Hi my name is Reece Nortum I am a soldier in Afganistan I was digging through a old box of stuff in a market in the north east part of the country and I found a 1804 flowing hair siver coin i was wondering if there was away to tell it was real or what the story is behind this coin thank you for your time.

Answer
Sorry Reece, but all you have is one of many thousands of counterfeits of this coin.  They have been making fakes of this coin in Middle East and Far East countries for decades.

If you weigh it, check the metal composition, examine the edge (supposed to be lettered, not reeded or seamed), or compare the design with a genuine example, I will bet you money that it is not real.

More information and specs about the genuine coin can be found here :

I hope this helps,

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
