Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Italian Lire

Question
I found 2 Italian coins. One is 100 Lire dated 1957 with a standing soldier and tree on the back, and a 50 Lire with a date of simply 979 and a naked man with a hammer. Anything of value here?

Answer
Hi Paul,
The 1979 coin would be worth just a dollar or two even in perfect condition. The 1957 coin is very hard to find in mint condition, being an early date from this series. A coin with wear is also worth just a dollar or two. However, if you have one without any signs of wear and shiny luster a fair price would be $50. One that is very very close to having no wear at all is worth $5 or less. This drastic difference is often the case with modern coins (post-1950) because they are easy to find in just any grade, but can be very hard to find in perfect shape.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
