Question
QUESTION: Hello.
I cannot find the Joseph II kronentaler 1784 B (Kremnitz issue)in the Krause.
Please, help me and estimate the bold XF condition.
Your reply will appreciated.
Kind regards.
 Leon Altshuller, Israel.

ANSWER: Hi Leon,
The Krause book is full of typographical errors and omissions, which vary from one edition to another. I usually keep 3 editions just in case I need to cross-reference any unusual information.
The 1784(b) Austrian Netherlands kronenthaler is one of the higher mintage dates in this series. In XF it lists for $110 (USD). A practical auction value, if sold by a reputable coin dealer, is $90 to $125 on the American market and $150 to $200 on the European market. A retail value in a European coin shop would be higher for a bold example with original surfaces and no problems. You can also have the coin certified by a reputable grading company for $50 or less, which would give it a real world value of around 250 Euro.
Thanks for the question! =)

QUESTION: Hi, Dim.
Thank you for the fast response.
The letter (b) refers to Brussel mint and this mark does not appear on the coin (below the laureat bust). This is very common coin.
My case is another - the Capital letter B exist below the bust. B - means Kremnitz (placed in Hungary)issue. There are many another differences in legend, letters shape and portrait.
I agree with you absolutely, that Krause catalogue has been build roughly whith lots of mistakes and with manner "copy-paste".
In any way, my request is actual and, please, make a homework better ;-))
Thank you again.
 Sincerely
    Leon.

Answer
Ok, I see what you mean. The 1784 with a B is not listed in any of the editions that I have. However, looking at European auction records I see that this one has on average a 10% to 15% higher value than the 1784(b). One particular auction in Germany had both of these coins in VF grade and the difference in price was 6 euros.
Sorry about the initial mix-up. =)
Thank again!

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
