Question

russian 1781 coin
Can you please tell me the market (fair) value of a 5 Kopeck Copper Coin of Catherine II from Russia dated of 1781 and EM Mintmark according w/ attached image.

Many Thanks,

Answer
Hi Rui,
Unfortunately this coin has some corrosion on the surfaces, most likely from being in the ground for many years. Coins like this that were dug out of the ground or found under water have a value at the low end of the range, around $5. If there was no corrosion, a coin with fairly good details like this would be right around $20.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
