Question
I have 2002 Louisiana S mint quarter, I was told that this quarter was not suppose to be in circulation. I would like to know if it is worth anything.

Thanks in advance,

Marilyn Mchenry

Answer
Hi Marilyn:

Thanks for your question.

You are correct. The "S" mint quarter was a proof strike, and not intended for general circulation. You'll need to look at the edge to determine if it is a clad or silver proof. The clad proof will have a sandwich appearance with a copper center, like the normal "P" and "D" circulation strikes. The silver proof will appear as one solid color, without the copper center. There were 3,084,245 clad proofs and 892,229 silver proof struck for the Louisiana State Quarter program.

One dealer is selling the clad proof for $5.00 and the silver proof for $9.95.

You may want to check eBay listings under US coins in the State Quarter category to see if your coin is listed and what it is going for. If you live close to a coin shop, they should offer you an opinion as to the condition, and value at no charge. Always try and get at least two opinions and try and deal with PNG dealers if possible. If you should decide to sell your coin to a dealer, remember they will offer about 50% to 60% of the retail value.  Here's a link to find one in your area: http://www.pngdealers.com/dealersearch.php
