Question
Today i found a penny(im assuming?) that has a large D on the back with 'UNCIRCULATED' imprinted along the top and 'DENVER' imprinted on the bottom. The front has 'TREASURY' along the top and 'UNITED STATES MINT'on the bottom with a shield in the center. The shield has a scale on the top then an angled band with stars and then a key on the bottom. It doesnt have a date or amount anywhere on it so im curious as to what it is exactly?? Thanks for your help...

Answer
Jessica,

This is not actually a coin, but rather a token that is included in the U.S. Mint packaged Uncirculated Coin Sets.

The sets have two cellophane packs -- one each for the Denver Mint coins and the Philadelphia Mint coins -- and each pack has one of these tokens included.

When a collector or dealer cuts apart one of these sets to either put in a collection or prepare to sell as single coins, these tokens are what's left over.

Collector interest in these is practically non-existant -- value at a few cents.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
