Question

i recently purchased a beautifull full sheild back 1859 sovereign which upon close inspection shows signs of mechanical doubling on date and 'victo' 5 on date is also incomplete
is this a rare occurence for this type?
does it add or detract value?
please see attached photos
your input is eagerly anticipated
kind regards paul

Answer
Hi Paul, mechanical doubling isn't usually considered a true error.
Of course, it depends on who is is looking at the coins as well as the price.
I do not think it would detract from its value in any way but perhaps 10% extra would be a fair expectation if you find someone that appreciates that oddity.
You might try Ebay.com for similar pieces for comparison.
