Question
I have a coin with Republica mexico Un peso. Mo 1905.a.m. 902,7 Libertad and am interested to know something about it - thanks

Answer
Hi Ell,
You have a silver Mexican peso from the Mexico City mint, which is one of several mints that produced these peso coins. They are made of .9027 purity silver, which is below the English .925 sterling standard, but slightly above the .900 silver standard for most other countries. It is recommended to weigh the coin on an accurate digital scale, since there are also many counterfeits of these types of coins. A genuine coin will be 27.0 grams, though one with wear may be as much as a gram lower. Counterfeits will be 2 or more grams lighter or, occasionally, a little heavier.
This is also one of the better dates for this type. Value starts at around $20 for a decent, well used coin and goes as high as $150 for one in mint condition. Nearly all the other dates have a maximum value that is half or less than half of this date.
If you would like to post a follow-up question with a clear picture of the "eagle" side of the coin, I can give you an exact grade and value for it.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
