Answer

Hi,
The design of this medal is based on a rare coin from Denmark. If you look at the picture I have attached you may notice a date of 1848 below the portrait. This is a commemorative 1 speciedaler (the Danish version of a silver dollar at that time). The one you have has all the correct details, but is missing the date. This is typical of privately made "tribute" medals of famous coins. If it were a genuine 1848 speciedaler, it would be in impossibly great condition and worth a small fortune.
I do not know what is on the other side of your piece, but the 1848 coin would have another portrait facing in the same direction, only with a wreath of leaves around the head. It was made to commemorate the death of ruler Christian VIII and ascension to the throne of Frederik VII.
The piece appears to be silver, though it is hard to tell from a picture. If it is, a fair retail value would be in the range of $30 to $50 depending on whether it was sold on the American or European markets.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
