Question

1812 Half Dollar
Hi, I know I am not the first person to ask this, but is this a small or large 8, and what is the value of this coin.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi again Andy,
This is the large 8, as is found on all regular date 1812's. The small 8 is only found on the 1812 over 11 over-date variety. This variety would be clearly visible due to a vertical bar from the 1 left over inside the "2" in the date.
Based on the side pictured it appears to be a very nice AU example. As such I would expect in the range of $300 to $400 for this coin at a good auction.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
