QUESTION: the coin is a larger coin,3or 4cm wide with a 2 on one side of the shield and a G on the other side of the shield
AnswerHi Jon, it is a Dutch 2-1/2 Gulden with 4.5 million minted that year featuring King William III (1849-90). This coin should weigh 25.0 grams and would contain .7596 of an ounce of silver. If it doesn't weigh right it is a fake. If genuine, collector value may be worth about $15 with heavy wear to around $25 with moderate wear to maybe $70 with light wear.
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
