Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1911 error v nickel

Question
I have a 1911 v nickel that is the exact diameter of a penny instead of a nickel. It is missing the outer ridge, it is in good condition. Ever heard of this mistake and is it worth anything?

Answer
Rick,

I have to believe the coin was altered after it left the mint -- it's not possible to strike a coin like this.  If the coin was struck on a penny blank, that would be possible -- but not on a blank made of nickel.  Even if it was struck on a foreign blank, it would have been spread out to the diameter of a nickel (or more closely to it than you describe).  To be struck to exactly the size of a penny is unheard of -- I bet it does not have a raised rim, right?

So again I have to believe it was altered at some time after it left the mint, making it worthless to collectors.  Feel free to get an expert to look at it first-hand, but I would bet they would give the same answer.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
