Question

1921 20 pesos gold
Hello Brad
I have come into possession of a 1921 20 peso gold coin which I am told is rare and valuable. It is currently in a bezel but appears that a skilled jewler could probably remove it. I read on one of your previous answers that in its current condition it is a piece of jewelry - not a coin. The bezel and chain are both 14K gold. Is this coin worth the effort of having it removed from the bezel setting? In other words would the coin alone be more valuable then it is in its current setting?

Thanks
DON

Answer
Hi Don, don' believe everything you hear. The 90% gold coin contains .4822 of an ounce of gold. That's about $584 right now. The overdates that year were numerous and seem to be more abundant that the plain date so it has no unusual rarity. I would place the coin's value a little over the gold vale. Add the bezel in if you can sell it and that's the way I'd go. Any marks left on the coin by its removal and its simply worth the gold.
