Question

Conf Deratio Coin
Hello Mr. Livshits. I am contacting you about a coin I found. On one side is the side profile of a head with the words "Conf (oe mixed together) Deratio Helvetica" and the date, 1952. On the other side it has a floral design around the outside and and 20 on the middle. I don't know much about coins but I would feel safe saying it is in "good" condition because there are no scratches, everything that is raised (words, head, etc.) is in good looking condition and there is no significant fading that I can tell. Also on the crown? of the head is the word "libertas" in very small font. I was wondering if you had any idea where this coin comes from and the potential value of it. Thank you for your time helping me.

Answer
Hi Mike,
This is a 20 rappen coin from Switzerland. They have some collectible value, but mostly in mint condition with original luster. Normally they are spendable and exchange at close to 1:1 with the US dollar. This coin is certainly high grade, so a collectible value would $2-$3. If you come across any other Swiss coins you will always see the word "Helvetica" or "Helvetia" that let's you know it's Swiss.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
