Answer
Hi Shannon,
In mint condition, as the coin in the picture appears to be, they list for $30 to $40 for this date and mint mark (which is one of the better ones from the series. There were a little over 1 million coin made in 1937 with a G mint mark. Most other dates have mintage between 5 and 10 million.
The ones on eBay usually have had a light cleaning, so the $20 or so prices you saw are quite accurate for those coins.
Coins like this that are heavily worn or have damage are only worth around $5.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
