Question
Hi, I found this coin in my button box that an elderly aunty gave me years ago! On one side it says LEOPOLD I ROI DES BELGES 1860 with a picture of the king faceing to the right, on the other side it says L' UNION FAIT LA FORCE 20 c and has a lion stood on its feet faceing to the left. Is this coin of any worth? Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hi Paula,
This Belgian 20 centimes coin was only made for two years, 1860 and 1861. They are not particularly scarce in circulated grades and range from around $10 for a decent but used coin and go up to around $50 for one with only minimal wear.
These coins are quite rare in mint condition, with no wear at all and shiny luster. Prices for a coin that is like brand new are anywhere from a couple of hundred to as much as $500, depending on the exact number grade out of 70.
If you would to know an exact grade and value for your coin, simply attach a clear picture of the portrait side to a follow-up question.
Thanks! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
