Question
I have a golden 5 rubli from 1899 -can you tell me how rare is it and how much is it worth?

Thanks,
Anna

Answer
Hi Anna,
The value on these coins depends very much on condition. If the coin has signs of wear, it will be worth right around the gold bullion value, which is currently $160 (this coin has .124 ounces of pure gold and gold is trading at $1,240-$1,250 per ounce).
If the coin is in mint condition with no signs of wear and original shiny luster, the value will be twice as much.
I can grade the coin if you like. Just attach a clear picture of the side with Nicholas' portrait.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
