Question
I have a coin about the size of a dime.  One side says gentulio vargas and the other side says brasil 400 reis 1940.  I cant seem to find any information on the internet.  Can you help me?

Answer

Hi Maylee,
This type that you have was made in 1938, 1940 and 1942. There were over 7 million coins made in 1940, out of copper-nickel alloy. Value starts at just a dollar or two for a used coin and goes up to around $5 for one in mint condition.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
