Question

I have a Carolus IIII coin dtd 1798 dei gratia hispan.et.ind.rex.m.8R.f.m. but unable to find value or info

Answer
Hi Antonella,
This is an 8 reales or "pillar dollar" from the Mexico City mint. It's one of the more common mints, but a decent coin with not too much wear and no damage starts at $50 and can be an easy $100 if the wear is minimal. There are many fakes out there, so you want to make sure your coin is right around 27 grams. If it has some wear it may be as low as 26.5, but anything lower than that is likely not a genuine coin.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
