Answer

Hi Brian,
Sounds like a 5 centimes coin from the French Colonies (the French possessions in the Caribbean sea). The date can be anywhere from 1825 to 1844, but they all have similar values. The coin is bronze, but they often take on a pale gold-like tone due to being used on island nations with a lot of humidity. Unfortunately with a worn date the value is only a couple of dollars. They range around $20-$25 for a decent example with little wear. Mint condition coins are $75 to $100 an up.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
