Question
Hi I live in Mallorca and our guests have just come back from shopping with a coin that the shop keeper said was English? It is about the size of a euro, silver round the outside and gold colour in the middle. it has the bust of a young man with glasses looking left, writing to each side of his head but have no idea what language? When you hold the coin with the head on the front and turn it round the back side is upside down with buildings that could be a temple 4 points and one large one at the bottom is an open zero and an O then three letters that could be U backwards r and n the 10. Any ideas please. Many thanks Linda

Answer

Hi Linda,
This sounds like a 10 baht coin from Thailand, made from 1988 to 1996. I have attached a picture for comparison.
They are too new and common to have a collectible value. since they are still spendable currency, the exchange rate for 10 baht is around 0.25 euro.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
