with a weird looking wrap on her head. the date reads 1863, also there
are stars as a border around the head. it doesn't say anything else. can u
help identify it?

Answer

Hi Douglas,
This is a US Civil War token. These were used as a morale booster for the public and were also accepted as 1 cent trade tokens by some people. There were many of these with various designs. The one you have is among the more common ones and value starts at around $5 for a well used coin or one with problems and goes up to $20-$30 for one in good shape. Mint condition coins with luster are scarce and command a significant premium, even for the more common tokens.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
