Question
can you tell me about this coin and what it is worth? It is stamped with a 'B'

Answer
Hi Laura,
This 5 francs is made of .835 purity silver and should weigh right around 15 grams for a genuine coin. The B stands for Bern, where the coins were minted. This type was made from 1931 to 1969, with a little over 2 million coins made in 1939.
Value depends on condition and ranges from around $10 for a well used coin up to $30-$40 for one in mint condition with luster.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
