Question
I have a silver coloured german coin - wilhelm koenig von preussen 'A' with the head facing to the right. On the other side has an eagle and reads - ein vereinsthaler xxx ein pfund 1862. It has a small hole through the top of it.
could you tell me what it is and is it worth anything. thankyou

Answer
Hi Jude,
Unfortunately the hole will reduce the value to that of it's weight in silver. This coin is not particularly rare, and even without a hole a coin with heavy wear would be worth silver value. It is made of .900 purity silver and will have around a half ounce of pure silver content.
If the coin is otherwise very sharp, without wear on the high points like the hair and the eagle's breast, it will still be worth 50% above silver bullion with the hole.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
