Question
Hi Dmitry
I brought a Italy 20 lira silver coin. obv. head of mussolini wearing combat helmet and rev. is lion head. The weight is 16.7 grams and dia. is 35.5mm I doubt about the weight is to light for 35.5mm dia. and 2mm thickness need your advice regarding my piece, is it correct or fake?

Answer
Hi again Buboy,
This is a fantasy version. It is listed in the Krause book "Unusual World Coins" with a value of $20. The genuine version of this coin was made in 1928 and head the head of ruler Vittorio Emanuele III instead of Mussolini. The weight means it is made of the common alloy that modern replicas are made of, including those of Chinese and US silver dollars that are also too light.
Thanks again for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
