Question
I recently purchased this coin on ebay and have learned a little history about the coin. I know that the coin made during the McKinley/Bryan election period, but know little else about it. It is a very nice coin,lightly circulated, with little wear. The inscription on the back says it is a government dollar, comprised of 825 grains fine silver with the equivalent value of one gold dollar. If you can tell me more about this coin that would be great. Thanks, Jason

Thanks for the question.

Without a photo, I can not pinpoint exactly what you have, but can tell you it is a "So Called Dollar". It is also classified as a Bryan Dollar. From the So-Called Dollar site: "These medals were made by Eastern silversmiths during Presidential campaigns of 1896 and 1900. They were more dignified in tone than many contemporary pieces issued for the same purpose, as latter usually were struck in base metal and were most satirical of Bryan and his cause. These silver medals showed comparative size and ratio of a dollar struck at the then-current price of silver with what it would be like if free coinage were to rule. They are much more than mere political pieces as they bore direct reference to the silver controversy and, hence, to our national coinage."

Recently, a similar piece was offered on ebay for a reserve of $303.88 and did not sell.

You may want to check ebay listings under Exonumia in the So-called Dollar category to see what these pieces are going for.
