Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1928 $2.5 gold coin

Question
Hi, I have a gold indian head $2.5 coin from 1928. It was purchased from a bank around that time and was passed down several generations. I've searched high and low for answers to a value and can't find any stable answers. It was originally slabbed and was broken out of slab during an episode with my father. It has since been kept in a plastic sandwich baggie. Under a 5x magnifying glass it has no Knicks or scratches and has only been handled by the edges. It shines brilliantly. Unfortunately I'm on my iPhone and don't have pictures but any info would help. I know it survived the gold act by our govt. During the great depression, I don't know if this increases the value.

Thanks!

Answer
Tom,

1928 is actually one of the more common dates for $2.5 gold indians.  Assuming it is an uncirculated coin, it's value will be $350 to $400 or more -- exact grade must be determined first-hand by an expert for it to be valued higher, because 1 point differences in MS grades change the value by hundreds of dollars.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
