Question
11/2/2011 I believe you said this is a damaged coin if you are sure please tell me how it could or would happen because i have one to,how would happen the same way twice that i know about. I BELIEVE ITS A ERA COIN THANK YOU FRANK.

Answer
Hi Frank,

This question has come up several times.  There have been examples submitted to grading services that have agreed that it was caused by post-mint-damage.  There have even been people that tried to sell them on ebay (with no success).

I'm sure it was caused by some kind of contact on the coin that occurred long ago -- most likely a coin rolling machine.  And over time, the coin got circulated and so wear and toning made the evidence of the damage less visible.

There is a good discussion about this, with pictures, here :

I hope this helps,

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
