Question
Hi there, the coin I have says REPVBLIQVE FRANCAISE on one side with a womans head and the other side has RF 5 francs 1947.  I have a coin book from 2008 and it says the value is 165.00 to 1,200 dollars if it was struck for colonial use in Africa.  Then below that it says that date coin is worth 60 cents to 6 dollars without mint mark. What am I looking for exactly to tell the difference and where is it?? {Im new to coin collecting!!}  Thanks, Becky

Answer
Hi Becky,
Sorry for the delay in answering your question.
The difference between these two varieties is the material they are made of. The rare one is aluminum-bronze and has a yellow color. The common variety is aluminum, silver colored and very light weight.
The mint mark for all dates of this type is located at the bottom of the side with "5 francs", between the bottom of the wreath and the rim.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
