Question
I have 2 5 dollar liberty gold coins. they are mounted as cuff links both are in very good shape. they have been in my wifes case for 20 years. Both are 1903. they are set in 18 caret gold bands. I would like to know the coins worth. and if i should leave them as cuff links or have them removed from sets and sell them as coins. Thank you

Answer
Hi Leroy,
Once a gold coin is mounted, it loses it's collector value unless it is a rare date.  1903 is a common date so there is no issue there.
I would sell them as cufflinks if possible.  They should bring in the neighborhood of $1,000.

The $5 gold pieces have just under 1/4 oz of pure gold so there alone you have about $800.  The remainder depends on the weight of the links themselves.
