Question

back of coin
I have this coin I know its silver not sure of the content but on the front it has a man wit a hat on which has what looks to be a feather on it and on the reverse side has a lion standing sideways with his face out and one leg up above him it looks like a crown with some sort of jewel any idea what it is

Answer
Hi Paul,
This coin is from Iran, of the 1927 to 1929 type and made of .900 silver.
I can't tell the size exactly from the picture, but it appears to be one of the larger denominations. If it's a little smaller than a US half dollar, you have a 2000 dinars (also called 2 kran). If it's a little smaller than a US silver dollar then you have a 5000 dinars (5 kran).

There is an ascension date of AH1304 (1925) to the left of the bust and the actual date of the coin is at the bottom in small characters. There are no key dates for these however. In this condition you are looking at $15 to $20 for the 2 kran one and $25 to $35 for the 5 kran, if they were sold on eBay.

Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
