Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Miss struck quarter

Question
Hi, I have a 1996 US quarter, every thing is legible on it and its in great condition. The difference in this quarter is that its bigger around then all the other quarters I've seen. I didnt even notice when i first found it, but i out it in a pool table to play a game and it wouldnt fit, lol. It's like they either stamped it too hard or used too much material when making it. Its quite a bit off center, has no ridges at all on it, and is noticeably bigger than other quarters. I was wondering if it could be worth something more then a normal quarter? I do know that I have won every pool game I've played with this quarter in my pocket, and I'm not all that good, lol. thanks

Answer
Hi Willy,

I wouldn't sell it if you're winning!

It sounds to me like a mint error, however not a rare one.  When a coin is struck, the coin blank (planchet) is held in place by a collar.  That preevents the coin from spreading too much and also puts the ridges into the edge upon striking.  If that collar is missing, the coin you have is usually the result.  The sell for a few dollars.  Check ebay for similar items and current market.
