rep of minerva coin
Hi Dan,
Just came across one of these in its case and in mint condition and was wondering what it might be worth.
Do you know?   Thanks, David L

Answer
Hi David,

You have a 1973 one-year only minted, 10,500 piece mintage, 35 Minerva Dollars face value, PROOF coin from the South Pacific island nation of Minerva.  Minerva's longitude and latitude are listed on the obverse of the coin.  And as stated on the reverse of coin, it is comprised of 24 grams of .999 fine silver, layered with 10 grains (0.65 grams) of 24K gold.  This coin was struck at the (privately owned) Letcher Mint in Lancaster, California.

Technically, there is currently about $20 worth of silver and $30 worth of gold in it, but nobody will give you anything for the gold, since you would need a ton of this layered gold stuff before a smelter would even consider melting it for the gold.

There is currently one listed on eBay for $70 -- it's second listing, it did not sell the first time.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
