Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Walker Anomaly

Question
Obverse
Obverse
I recently obtained this 1944 D Walking Liberty at auction,it was in a bulk lot. After closer inspection of my coins at home, I noticed this strange anomaly it seems to me.. mint error? The reverse looks as almost a cooled molten pool and the obverse is a raised circle and looks as if she is holding a basket. Would this be a rarity of value? Any other info in your expertise would be greatly appreciated. I will upload 2 separate pictures.

Answer
Hi Adam,

Thank you for the pictures -- that is an unusual looking coin.

From your description, I would have said it had been in a fire.  But from the pictures, I don't believe that to be the case.  Either way, it did not come from the mint that way.

From its appearance, my impression is that somebody just beat the crap out of that coin, using a hammer, a stamp, a pick, and perhaps some kind of pliers.  They had it out for the coin -- looks like they tried to destroy it, or were at least taking out their aggression on it.

Considered (extremely) damaged, the only value it will ever have is for the silver it contains -- currently about $10.00

I hope this helps,

Dan

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
