Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1889-2006 South Dakota quarter

Question
I found a quarter that only has that nickle coating on the backside and the front seems to be copper or zinc. My question is how and why this would happen and could it be worth anything I've never seen something like this before it also seems to weigh less than normal.

Answer
Tony,

The blanks for these quarters are cut from long strips of metal.  These strips are composed of mostly copper with a coating of silvery-looking copper/nickel.  If part of the strip does not get its outer coating, then blanks cut from that area will show copper on one side or both.  This is what you have.

Collector interest in these has been high, with certified ones selling for $300-$400 on eBay.  You need to get it certified first though.  Check the following websites for info on how to get it certified :

I hope this helps,

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
