Question
I recently purchased the 1909 S VDB from a local shop owner. The coin had been graded years back by PCGS... What I would like to know, as I purchased the coin for investment purposes, is what was the value of the same coin in EF-45 condition say 10 years ago? I am looking for a roundabout average as to the increase of value over time....

Hi Owen,

No one has a crystal ball on the future.  I hesitate giving you a bench mark figure.  And there is always a risk the coin will go down in value (although it has performed well over time). I'd recommend comparing retail prices over the last 40 years and then making your own assumptions.  The 1969 Red Book, A Guide Book to United States coins lists an EF [EF-40] coin at $167.50.  The 2011 Red Book lists an EF-40 coin at $1,400.  I suspect you paid less then retail, but these prices should give you a good idea of the coins increase over time.  The extra 5 points EF45 is a slight bonus in grade that will pay off over time.  PCGS is a great brand - so it sounds like you did good.

Please remember to never clean coins, this can damage and lessen their value.  Also, soft plastics can contain harmful chemicals that can react with coins over time.  Try using inert materials when storing coins.  Plus, it is always a good idea to store coins in a safe.  The safe should not be exposed to the elements and should not be up against a wall to the outside.  These are just a few tips I have learned over the years to help keep your collection in top shape.
