Question

1944 d ten cent Nehter
I have a coin and it looks like D mint over P mint mark. I can not find a comparision photo Of D mint mark coin. Take a look and who can I send it to certify if it is authentic. I had a lot of grim on the coin and cleaned it with wooden toothpick and soap and distilled water. Iwill attach aphoto

Answer
Hi Rich,
It's a little difficult to tell from the angle of the photo, but it appears to be a normal P that was wither dinged at the tips, which commonly hapens on coins, or someone had attempted to alter to look like a D (also not uncommon).
The actual D mint mark is the same size as teh whole P, not just the D shaped loop of the P.
I think sending it for certification would be a waste of your money, since it will come back without being certified and teh grading companies keep your money.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
