Question

penny
hello, I have a 1955 D wheat penny that is bigger that a reg penny it has a copper ring around the outside, with the penny on the inside  what do i have

Answer
Mark,

Thank you for the picture.

It looks like somebody used some kind of machine to roll up the edge of the coin -- reshaping the metal to raise the rim and overlap the design.  If it's thicker than normal, but smaller in diameter than a regular penny, then this is what you have.  Not sure why somebody would do this -- maybe too much time on their hands?

Considered damaged, it has no collector value.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
