Question
What is the value of a French Colony of Cayenne 1732 2 Sous coin? I was surprised to see how thin the coin was but all the markings are very legible.  Does have tarnish but I am afraid to clean it.  With the coin being 279 years old and struck in the same year that George Washington was born what would be the value of this coin?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Larry,
This is a actually a 1782 coin from the French Guiana colony at the northern part of South America.
Parts of the lettering and date are often weakly struck, making it hard to distinguish certain letters or numbers. These coins were first minted circa 1780.
You may be surprised but they are actually common, especially in the Americas. Decent, mid-grade examples can be had for $10 to $20 on eBay.
If it were a US coin of that age the value would be a good 10 times more at the very least.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
