Question

Bicentennial Silver Me
Hello Dan, Can you give me some information about my 3" Silver Bicentennial Medal with the matte finish like what is the silver content, the weight and its value?  None of the coin dealers in my area have ever seen one let alone tell me whether it is pure silver or not.  They want to mark it and put some kind of chemical on it and I won't allow them to do that.  Thanks for your help.  Jon

Answer

Nat. Bic. Medal Order
Hi Jon,

I deal with these on a regular basis.

This is one of the medals from the Official National Bicentennial Medal series, produced by the U.S. Mint in bronze, silver and gold.

This one is made from Sterling Silver (.925 fine) and weighs a little less than 9 ounces.  According to mint figures, there were only 8,041 of these minted, and they originally sold for $150 each.  The mint only accepted orders for these medals for the first 7 months of 1976.

I have attached a picture of the original order form.

I currently pay over the silver melt value for these medals, because I have customers waiting for me to find them.  Contact me directly at working.man@usa.net if you would like to sell yours.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
