Question
I have been researching my 1908 funf-mark coin, and have not been able to find one online.  On the front is a right-facing profile of Kaiser Wilhelm II with a mustache, but no beard.  It reads Wilhelm II Deutscher Kaiser V. Preussen.  On the reverse, it reads Deutsches Reich 1908, Funf Mark.  I've  been able to find 3-mark coins, but cannot find out anything about this 5-mark.  What can  you tell me about the coin and it's value?  Thank you!

Answer
Hi Terri,
The 5 marks are about as common as the 3 marks. Both are plentiful in circulated condition, but very scarce in mint, lustrous condition. A typical example with moderate wear is worth in the $30 to $40 range. One with no signs of wear at all and original luster will be worth close to 10 times that.
The 2 mark coins of this type are more scarce.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
