Question
Hi. I am wondering if you could give me information about a coin I currently have in my possession. It is Italian and silver and the front of it says
Curvature omne.genv aspromonte

the back says
L.V.D. Popsis Dioc. D.Gerace Incoronata Nel 1881
A Cura Dell'arcipr G. Mittiga

I am just wondering if you could give me some clues about it. Thank you so much for your time!

Answer
Hi Nikki,
This is a Roman Catholic item commemorating the "Madonna di Polsi", which originates from an apparition in 1144 to a shepherd who became lost in the woods while looking for one of his sheep.
The Madonna di Polsi was given a special ritual in 1881 by the bishop of Gerace, which is what the item you have refers to.
You can see the sanctuary and the history here (this is a link to a Google translated page, so the link is unusually long): http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=it&u=http://www.mariadinazareth.i...

I would not be able to give you a value on the piece without having seen clear pictures of it.

Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
