Coin and Paper Money Collecting/pennies

Question
I have a roll of pennies, in a plastic penny container, uncirculated from 1987 D with a little state of Illinois stamp on them. I don't even remember where they came from. Is there any value to the pennies, besides .01c or the significance of the Illinois stamp>

Answer
Tammy,

These were used to make up sets with all the 50 different state stamps on them, which were then attached to some kind of board and sold as a display.

The Illinois image was added to a roll of regular pennies by some person after the coins left the mint.

By themself, they have very little value -- perhaps a few cents --  but it could take you 20 years to sell them all.  If you had a roll that had a complete set of all 50 states in it, you might be able to get $10 for it.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
