Question
I have a 1925 one centavo coin with United States of America on one side but it has One Centavo on the other with Philipinas on the bottom of the coin.  Can you tell me more about it, why does it have the USA on one side and Philipinas on the other, plus what it may be worth?  Coin is in fairly good condiction, readable and still raised areas.  Thanks, Tom Bishop

Answer
Thomas,

The Philippines was a Soveriegn Entity or a Commonwealth of the United States from 1899 to 1946.  One of the things the U.S. did for them was to mint coinage, so all coinage in this time period will have both United States of America and Filipinas on them.  Prior to 1925 these were minted in Philadelphia and San Francisco -- from then on they were minted in Manilla and should have an "M" mintmark.

There were over 9 million of these 1 Centavo coins minted in 1925.  In the described condition, its value is a dollar or less.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
