Question
I would like to know the current value of this coin. It's face  value is 200,000 zlotych or 20,000 zloty (poland) it is .999% silver coin. Commemorating discovery of america 500 year celebration. Mint year is 1992. It is in mint condition.
At face value it would be worth some 6,000 us dollars. Or is it only worth the siver content. Where could I sell such a coin and what is it's real value?

Answer
Hi John,
This coin is certainly worth more than silver value considering that only 20,000 coins were minted.
This currency is not exchangeable. This was the pre-inflation denomination, which in 1995 was changed to the new zloty at a rate of 10,000 zloty to 1 new zloty.
The current value is around $60 (they sell anywhere from the $50's up to low $70's). I should also mention that the values for these coins have gone down this year from where they were in 2009 and 2010. Polish catalogs now list this coin at $50 to $60 for the proof version that has frosted raised features and mirror-like fields. A year or two ago they were listed at $70 to $80.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
