Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1792 One Cent Coin

Question
1792 Cent
1792 Cent
I have a coin that presents a mystery. It's about 23mm diameter, silver in color, and has (as best as I can determine) a close to exact image (pattern) of a Judd-2 1792 cent coin. The difference is that the image is off center approximately 60% both obverse and reverse sides. If it is a fake, I don't understand why someone would make an "error" fake, but I appreciate that the chances of the coin being authentic are very small. I have studied pictures of authentic Judd-2's and the more I compare these with my coin, the more intrigued I become. I'd appreciate any suggestion or advice you can offer.
Thanks

Answer
William,

Along with Royal Oak Mint -- http://www.royaloakmint.com -- there are a couple other mints that make replica coins.  One of Royal Oak's specialties is to make error versions of these old, rare coins.  You might try going to their website and contacting them to see if what you have is one of their products, or if they may know where it came from.

Good luck,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
