Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1971 Quarter, cut small?

Question
My husband found a 1971 quarter that seems to be cut wrong. The very top of the letters of LIBERTY are cut off and the date at the bottom is partially cut off. I doesn't have the outer rim with the ridges, but when compared to another quarter the letters and numbers would still be off if it did have a rim. Just wondering if this could be a mis-strike and how much it would be worth if it was.

Answer
Rissa,

It's possible your coin was struck on a nickel or dime blank (instead of a quarter blank), which would make it worth hundreds of dollars.

However, it could also have been altered, which would be worthless.

First hand examination by an expert is required.

Try finding a local coin show or dealer where you can take it, and get their opinion(s).

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
